Charlotte County implemented the first phase of its county ambient monitoring in June 2022. The goal of Charlotte County's ambient monitoring program is to obtain information on the condition of surface waters flowing within Charlotte County. This is meant to supplement existing monitoring efforts in Charlotte Harbor and Lemon Bay, such as the monitoring programs maintained by the Coastal and Heartland National Partnership, and the Charlotte Harbor/Lemon Bay Aquatic Preserves just to name a few. This water quality monitoring program monitors local canals and waterways monthly. Information regarding the project and sample locations may be found via the following links:

Monitoring, Modeling, and Watershed Improvement Planning
A big portion of the OCOW Plan is to create a comprehensive system for monitoring water quality and quantity trends in Charlotte County, thus creating meaningful stories to inform those activities that affect our waters now and into the future. Such efforts are essential to understanding the drivers behind current and future impacts to our aquatic resources
One pathway to obtaining water quality data may be to establish a monitoring network that enables tracking and identifying regions with high rates of pollution compared to natural conditions and water quality criteria exceedances. This data acquiring network will then allow for:
- Development of interactive flow, flood, and pollutant modeling products to inform water management and permitting decisions.
- The development and implementation of water quality restoration plans throughout impaired areas of the county.
- The development of Watershed Management Plans to protect non-impaired waters.
